Alexander McQueen presents mycelium-inspired collection in first New York show in 20 years

British brand unveiled its latest creations in a Brooklyn warehouse this week

Mar 17, 2022

The Alexander McQueen design team were already marvelling at the connective properties of mycelium, the expansive, thread-like fungal networks that spawn mushrooms. And then they came across a giant oyster mushroom sprouting from the concrete floor of an abandoned space on the fifth floor of their London office block. It felt like a sign.

So mycelium became the reference point for the brand’s autumn/winter 2022 collection, which was unveiled in New York on Tuesday. This was Alexander McQueen’s first show in the city in more than two decades and, in keeping with the overarching theme, represented an opportunity to reconnect, said creative director Sarah Burton in her show notes.

Dell to use mushroom-based cushioning

Computer leader Dell has been testing cushioning made from a new "rapid renewable" material—mushrooms—and is now ready to use the packaging commercially for a variety of computer and electronic products.

As Oliver Campbell, head of the Dell packaging team, explained to Gearlog.com, "The process works like this: Waste product like cotton hulls are placed in a mold which is then inoculated with mushroom spawn. Our cushions take five to 10 days to grow as the spawn, which become the root structure—or by the scientific name, mycelium—of the mushroom. All the energy needed to form the cushion is supplied by the carbohydrates and sugars in the ag waste. There's no need for energy based on carbon or nuclear fuels."

The EcoCradle Mushroom packaging from Ecovative is one of several initiatives that Dell is using to help it reach its goal of eliminating 20 million pounds of packaging waste by 2012.

According to the supplier, Ecovative mushroom engineers worked with the Dell packaging team over the last eight months to develop a new formulation of EcoCradle, based around local cotton waste found near Dell's Austin, Texas, manufacturing facility, that could not only support the 100-lb servers, but could also provide the required shock absorption.

Engineered mycelium composite construction materials from fungal biorefineries:  A critical review

Author links open overlay panel

Significant pressure has been applied to the construction industry over the past decade, as the supply of traditional construction materials, such as cement, bricks, timber, cladding and partitioning materials, has struggled to keep up with an ever-increasing global population.

Mycelium composites are an emerging class of cheap and environmentally sustainable materials experiencing increasing research interest and commercialisation in the EU and USA for construction applications. These materials utilise natural fungal growth as a low energy bio-fabrication method to upcycle abundant agricultural by-products and wastes into more sustainable alternatives to energy intensive synthetic construction materials. Mycelium composites have customisable material properties based on their composition and manufacturing process and can replace foams, timber and plastics for applications, such as insulation, door cores, panelling, flooring, cabinetry and other furnishings. Due to their low thermal conductivity, high acoustic absorption and fire safety properties outperforming traditional construction materials, such as synthetic foams and engineered woods, they show particular promise as thermal and acoustic insulation foams. However, limitations stemming from their typically foam-like mechanical properties, high water absorption and many gaps in material property documentation necessitate the use of mycelium composites as non- or semi-structural supplements to traditional construction materials for specific, suitable applications, including insulation, panelling and furnishings. Nonetheless, useful material properties in addition to the low costs, simplicity of manufacture and environmental sustainability of these materials suggest that they will play a significant role in the future of green construction.
